Hope for the Midterms

The midterm elections are four months away--and no election has been more important for the American way of life than this campaign. Our president has seized the powers of Congress for himself, and the Republican majorities in the Senate and House are complicit. The Cabinet is staffed with billionaires, rather than experts in diplomacy, policy and economics-- and the Supreme Court is regularly canceling citizens’ rights and challenging well-established laws.

 We want to introduce the voters of Douglas County to our very qualified DFL candidates—who are offering a clear vision for local and national leadership, and who will represent all the citizens of the area, without bias.

 Republican candidates cannot defend the Iran War or the increasing cost of living--or any of the president’s broken promises. They rarely communicate Republican policy--and they do not represent us by blindly agreeing with the president’s platform of chaos, corruption and extravagance. Republican candidates are vulnerable; their base is shrinking-- and still they are focused more on loud opinions than on observable facts.

 We are working to find new ways to challenge unfounded opinions and discuss the real issues that matter most to voters. To accomplish this, we need to reach out to our friends, families and acquaintances—and ask them to vote for change. How do we frame our language around the nation’s issues, so that we can better listen to each other?

 First, know that we are not alone. We don’t wear bright red MAGA hats, so we don’t always recognize each other. Rallies, meetings, and other DFL events are good ways to find support in your community—a welcome network when the daily news is exhausting.

 We will share resources that you may rely on, dates and events you can calendar. We’ll continue to monitor proposed changes to voting procedures, to ensure every vote counts.

Meet our local DFL candidates in person, and you will find their tone is genuine and smart. Our DFL candidates are listening to us, open to the ideas that give voice to citizens—and they simply need our participation to succeed.

Erik Osberg has visited every county in the vast area that is CD7 (which is all of Western Minnesota, as far north as the Canadian border and extending nearly to Iowa), attending meetings and county fairs for the past year and a half. Kari Dorry is garnering exceptional endorsements, from like-minded organizations. Mike Gardner and Owen Werner are making appearances in the Douglas County voting precincts. They are all out knocking on doors and marching in parades. Our candidates are accessible, and they hear us.

Douglas County DFL hosted a Meet & Greet event in June, where these four candidates spoke--and they made time to chat with everyone in attendance. We’re working on more (and bigger) events for this summer and fall—a 100-Day Rally, candidate forums, guest appearances and surprises at our Douglas County Fair booth, and a few fundraising parties. We hope you attend the fish fry at Brophy Park Pavillion planned for early September and hosted by Erik Osberg.

We ask for your votes and encourage your involvement in your Douglas County DFL. It is critical to choose our representation for the coming years.
